Before everything else, you must remember that FlipaClip animates objects (or characters) in the frame-by-frame method. In FlipaClip, a frame is known as a ‘flip’.

#1 Name the project

First of all, you should open the FlipaClip app on your device. To do this, you can click on the red “+” button located towards the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Then, you should type in a proper name for your project.

#2 Select a background

Choose a background from the available options (or from camera roll). Then decide the size of the canvas as well. Don’t forget to add the number of frames (12 is better) before hitting the button “Create Project”.

#3 Select a tool

On the left-hand side of the screen, you can find the toolbox of FlipaClip. Pen, eraser, lasso, fill color and text are the tools docked in this toolbox.

By tapping on these tools, you can customize them. For instance, you can tap on the brush and change the thickness of the stroke. Also, you can change the transparency and the color of the pen.

Since we are going to animate a simple object, let’s start with a pencil. To do this, you should first tap on the pen brush and tap on the ‘pen’ icon. At the bottom of the screen, you can see different pen styles. Select a pencil.

#4 Start Drawing

To start drawing, you can simply use your fingers. Draw an object on the screen. If you made a mistake while drawing, tap on the eraser tool and brush on the mistake to erase it.

After drawing the object, you can zoom it in (using two fingers as you would do when zooming a picture). Just draw a simple object (circle) to start with.

#5 Animate the object

Now that you have drawn an object and it’s time to animate it. You should remember that you have already set the frame rate of the animation.

In order to create an animation (move the object from one place to another), there should be more than one frame in the scene. To add another frame to your animation, tap on the “+” button located at the bottom of the screen (next to a large box).

Draw the same object slightly towards the bottom and then add a new frame again. Do this repetitively for about 8-10 times. Then, you can hit the play button (located towards the right-hand side of the screen) to play the animation.

To Conclude…

In this FlipaClip demo, we have described a very simple animation. You can practice this exercise a couple of times so you will get a better understanding of creating complex and more attractive animations through FlipaClip.
